Competition students are required to take a minimum of two ballet classes and one jazz class per week. The turn class is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. It is expected that all competition dancers master the turns taught in this class as they will be used in choreography. Tap, hip hop, lyrical, pom, acro, and cheer/hip hop fusion are optional. Competition students will be required to compete in two competitions and attend one dance convention a year. More competitions and conventions will be offered to those interested.

Ballet

Ballet training is essential to a dancer's progress and is required of all students on the competition team. It is the foundation for many other dance forms, and one of the most beautiful and demanding forms of dance. Ballet teaches placement, alignment, balance and poise, while developing and strengthening the muscles.

Acro

Basic and advanced tumbling movements are taught on floor mats and then combined with choreography and put to music. Acrobatics is an excellent way for dancers to build flexibility and strength.

Pom

We are very excited to announce the start of an All-Star Pom program at Gotta Dance! Performing Arts Studio and hope to add this new style of dance to our competition team.

Pom uses jazz skills and incorporates pom poms and precise arm movements. It is a visual, team orientated, high energy mix of dance genres with more of a dance team style. All-Star Pom will reinforce dance technique taught in jazz and hip- hop while simultaneously improving skills such as timing, precision, musicality and performance. It is recommended that students taking pom also enroll in hip hop and acro.

All Star Cheer

This is a dynamic hip-hop cheerleading program with hopes of becoming competitive. It includes a high impact routine full of tumbling, jumps, and hip hop choreography all set to a mix of music. All Star Cheer/Hip Hop Fusion will teach basic cheer skills, stretching, and strengthening and combine them with hip hop. It is recommended that students taking this class also enroll in acro. This class is a great way to prepare your child for cheerleading and dance team auditions.

Hip Hop

Hip-hop is a fun, fast paced way to improve rhythm and coordination. Hip- hop is performed in a variety of styles which may include break dancing, B-Bop, Pop/Lock, and urban funk. It is one of the most popular forms of movement Gotta Dance! Performing Arts Studio has to offer.

Break Dancing

Breakdance or breaking is a street-based dance that incorporates intricate body movements, coordination, style, and aesthetics. The people who perform this style of dance are known as b-boys or b-girls.

Breakdancing is one of the most improvisational dance styles, allowing for each dancer to customize his or her routine with athleticism and imagination. These aspects of breaking make it one of the most popular dance styles today and it continues to grow as each person puts their own style on it.

Jazz

Jazz is a more expressive form of dance that is based in ballet technique, but emphasizes style and performance. Jazz dancers will work on flexibility, across the floor technique, body isolations, leaps and turns. Competition students are required to take a minimum of one jazz class per week.

Lyrical

Lyrical is an expressive, fluid form of dance where the dancer seeks to connect with the audience to tell the story of the music. Lyrical combines ballet and jazz techniques and is extremely technical. Students who train in lyrical must also take ballet and jazz. Lyrical may count as the second ballet class required of the competition team.

Tap

Tap focuses on technique, performance, rhythm, and musicality. Tap is taught in a graded, progressive system that requires the mastery of simple steps and patterns which then build into more difficult steps and rhythms.

Musical Theatre

This class combines broadway-style jazz technique with acting and singing. Dancers will become the character in the song they perform, sing or lip sync the lyrics, and act out the part they are dancing. Musical theatre allows children to develop a strong sense of confidence and enhances stage presence.

Turns

This class will break down the most basic turns, such as chaine, or pique turns and continue to teach the most complicated and challenging turns in a dancer's repertoire. The importance of turning technique cannot be over emphasized and will strengthen dancer's technique in every style. Dancers will learn to perform a complex series of turns safely and with proper technique. The turn technique class is recommended for all students.

Pilates / Yoga

Our yoga classes are open to students and adults of all ages. Each class consists of elements of both Hatha and Raja yoga. Yoga includes meditation and relaxation techniques, warm ups and stretching, physical postures and positions, as well as breathing techniques. Our classes can help combat back pain, reduce stress, can be used as an alternative to high intensity workouts, and can compliment dance training. Yoga increases flexibility and strength, improves balance and posture and will help students develop a better awareness and understanding of their bodies. Yoga is offered in 10 week session, based on enrollment. Please contact the studio for more information.

Zumba

Zumba is the perfect balance of dance, fitness, and fun! Regardless of your age, Zumba will put zest into your tired workout routine and get your heart pumping. You don't need to have a dance or fitness background to take part in this party. Easy and effective, we are confident you'll fall in love with Zumba just as we did. Come join our party, we look forward to meeting you!

Hula Hoop Fitness

Hula Hoop Fitness or Fitness Hooping is a fun, fast way to lose weight, improve muscle tone, and get a great cardio workout for adults and children. Fitness Hooping's rhythmic motions focus the mind and build concentration skills as well as muscles! Classes stress the development of hoop skills and tricks, together with the social connection and synergy that members develop when exercising in a playful way.

Fitness hoops are available to use at the studio. Custom-made fitness hoops are available for purchase.

Irish Dance

Irish Dance is offered by Siobhan Smith Rodrigues TCRG of Kinlough Academy of Irish Dance. We encourage you to read her bio on our staff page.

Please contact Siobhan at (315) 592-7331 for rates and information, or visit her website at www.kinloughacademy.com.

Competition Classes

Students must take ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and one conditioning class, which could include acro, pilates, yoga, strength training, break dancing.

We recommend that students take one elective class, such as turns and leaps, hula hoop fitness, hip hop, Irish dance, or musical theater.

Modern

Modern is a less formal, more expressive style of dance, based on methods of contract/release, and fall/recovery. Dancers become more grounded, centered, and comfortable with their bodies.
